How Urea Helps Chemotherapy Patients
Chemotherapy treatments can cause significant skin side effects, including dryness, irritation, peeling, and even painful cracks. Urea cream is commonly recommended for chemotherapy patients due to its multiple skin benefits, especially in managing xerosis (severe dry skin), hyperkeratosis (thickened skin), and compromised skin barriers.
Key Benefits of Urea for Chemotherapy Patients:
-
Deep Hydration & Moisture Retention
- Urea is a humectant, meaning it attracts and retains moisture in the skin.
- It helps restore hydration levels in severely dry, flaky, or peeling skin caused by chemotherapy.
-
Exfoliation & Smoothing of Rough Skin
- At higher concentrations (10% or more), urea acts as a keratolytic agent, meaning it helps soften and remove dead skin cells.
- This is beneficial for areas where chemo-induced dryness leads to rough patches, thickened skin, or calluses.
-
Barrier Repair & Protection
- Chemotherapy can weaken the skin’s protective barrier, making it more prone to cracks, sensitivity, and infections.
- Urea supports the natural skin barrier function, preventing moisture loss and strengthening the skin’s defenses.
-
Relief from Itching & Irritation
- Many chemotherapy patients experience pruritus (itching) and irritation as a side effect of their treatment.
- Urea’s moisturizing properties help soothe irritated skin and reduce itching, improving comfort.
-
Aids in Wound Healing
- For patients experiencing cracked, peeling, or damaged skin, urea supports tissue regeneration and healing.
- It prevents the buildup of hardened, thick skin, which can contribute to pain and slow healing.
-
Prevents Painful Skin Cracks
- Urea helps prevent painful skin fissures, especially in areas prone to dryness like the hands, feet, elbows, and knees.
- This is particularly important for patients experiencing hand-foot syndrome, a common side effect of certain chemotherapy drugs.
